Teenager charged with murdering girl, 15, at holiday park in Wales
Matthew Selby, 19, from the Greater Manchester area, has appeared in court after being charged with murdering a 15-year-old girl at Ty Mawr Holiday Park
A teenager charged with murder has appeared in court following the death of a 15-year-old girl at a caravan park.
Matthew Selby, 19, from the Greater Manchester area, was charged with murder after the girl was killed at Ty Mawr Holiday Park on Saturday.
The accused appeared at Llandudno Magistrates’ Court today and District judge Gwyn Jones remanded him in custody until tomorrow at Mold Crown Court, reports North Wales Live.
Prosecutor James Neary asked for the case to be sent to the crown court and said there was no entitlement to bail.
Defence solicitor Simon Sargent said during a hearing which lasted less than two minutes: ”I have nothing to add, save to say this a tragic case.”
Selby, wearing a grey sweatshirt and between two guards in the glass-fronted dock, spoke only to confirm his name, address and date of birth and to confirm that he understood the charge.
The girl’s school today described her as a ‘lovely student’ who will be ‘sorely missed’ by her classmates and staff. She cannot be named for legal reasons.
Teachers praised the Year 10 pupil’s performance in previous newsletters published by Droylsden Academy, in Tameside, Greater Manchester.
A statement published on the school’s website today reads: “Our school is saddened to have received the tragic news that one of our students… has lost her life whilst on holiday with her family in Wales.
“Our deepest sympathies and thoughts are with (her) family at what is an incredibly difficult time.
“Our school family is devastated by this awful news. (She) was a lovely student and she will be sorely missed by students and staff.
“Clearly, many members of our school community will be affected by this loss and we will be offering support to those who need it in the weeks and months ahead.
“We will also plan a tribute when the time is right so that we can remember all that (she) brought to our school.”
Police were called to a ‘domestic disturbance’ at Ty Mawr Holiday Park in Towyn, near Abergele, Wales, on Saturday afternoon.
The incident reportedly took place inside a caravan at the site and left holiday park bosses in shock.
Yesterday North Wales Police said: “Following an incident at Ty Mawr Holiday Park, Towyn on Saturday afternoon, 19-year-old Matthew Selby from the Greater Manchester area has this afternoon been charged with murder.
“He has been remanded in custody and will appear before magistrates tomorrow.
“We would ask the public not to speculate about this incident on social media as this is an active investigation.”
A spokesman for Ty Mawr Holiday Park previously said: “Ty Mawr is a very popular 100 acre family park which welcomes tens of thousands of happy holidaymakers every year.
“This was an isolated and unprecedented incident which happened inside a caravan. We are shocked that such a tragic situation happened in such a safe and happy environment, where families come to relax and enjoy themselves.”
